A stately pair of Italian Renaissance Revival side chairs dating to the late 19th century, distinguished by their grand scale and exceptionally detailed carving. Each tall back rises beneath an elaborate foliate crest, framing a pierced central splat carved with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral rosettes and balanced Renaissance ornament. The surrounding rails continue the decoration with delicately carved flowers and foliage, giving the chairs remarkable depth and refinement from every angle.
Carved aprons enrich the upholstered seats, supported by sculpted front legs ending in lion’s paw feet. Shaped rear legs and an elaborate H form stretcher unite the bases, with a boldly carved central ornament completing the composition. The warm, dark finish brings definition to the carving and reflects the commanding character associated with the Italian Renaissance Revival.
The Renaissance Revival movement drew inspiration from the palaces and grand residences of 15th and 16th century Italy, returning to the symmetry, classical ornament and accomplished woodcarving of that celebrated period. Created during an era when richly appointed libraries and studies expressed learning and refinement, these tall chairs would be particularly suited to a library, study or entrance hall, or placed as a stately pair beside a writing table or partner’s desk.|
