Striking and exquisite, this rare pair of Ritzenhoff & Breker porcelain mantel urns celebrates the elegance and romance of neoclassical design. Their graceful campana forms are inspired by classical antiquity, with flared rims, sweeping upturned handles, rounded bodies, slender pedestal stems and square plinth bases. Hand-painted black vignettes depict imaginary scenes of 18th-century courtly life, where elegantly dressed figures appear within quiet pastoral landscapes.
Rendered against luminous bone-colored porcelain, the finely detailed decoration has the delicacy of an antique engraving and conjures the grace, ceremony and romantic intrigue of a storied European past. Generous gold leaf follows the sculptural contours of the urns and surrounds finely painted floral medallions, scrolling foliage and classical borders.  The restrained black and bone palette tempers the richness of the gold, creating a composition that is opulent yet refined.
Preserved together in beautiful condition, the urns possess remarkable symmetry and a captivating decorative presence, combining neoclassical inspiration with the romance of an imagined 18th-century world. Both bear the Ritzenhoff & Breker mark beneath crossed arrows and the pattern number 396.  Ritzenhoff & Breker was founded in 1815 and still in operation today in Driburg, Germany!
