Set of Four 19th Century Black and White Transferware Plates are perfect for creating a little vignette in your decorating scheme.  Made in Jemmapes (which is now in Belgium) by J. B. Cappellemans, affiliated with Willems Smith & Company, four scenes are depicted: The Governor of Bombay's residence, the Chateau of the Governor of Madras, The House of Plaisance of Calcutta and finally a View of Bombay.  Created for export, such souvenir style plates were made for primarily the British Empire patrons who traveled through the region back and forth to their colony in India, when sailing was impractical.  The outer rim of the plates feature an interesting embossed floral pattern.  Glazing remains in excellent condition for such items nearing 150 years of age!
Sold as a Set of Four.
Circa 1880s
