19th Century Grand Italian Renaissance Walnut Hall Tree was crafted on a large scale to both welcome and impress visitors and family!  Reaching to ten feet in height, it was created by master cabinetmakers utilizing sumptuous walnut, sculpted in amazing detail from the top of the crown to the base above the drip pan in bold full relief as well as more subdued relief bordering.  Motifs are numerous, and include a stylized crest at the top situated on a wide pediment which is defined by bold molding and quatrefoil overlay with a panel of three rosettes, all flanked by elegant scrolled corbels enhanced with fruit and foliates.  All this appears over the multi-tiered bonnet which elaborates on the same themes and stretches the full width of the work.  Below the bonnet the working portion begins, with yet another panel with seven rosettes flanked by corbels carved with lions' heads, with four intricately wrought iron hangers spanning the width.  On each side a shell overlay bordering frames the three main carved panels, which consist of a fierce lion's head at the center surrounded by elaborate gryffins, fruit, foliates and scrollwork ~ and that's just the center panel!  The two flanking panels are mirror images of each other and depict dragons, flowers and foliates.  Below this visual feast is the rack for umbrellas and canes, held in place by a prominent center knob and on each side by whimsically carved corbels depicting lions' head, which transition down to the base where the removable drip pan resides.  Overlooking the drip pan is yet another work of the sculptor's art, with a stylized, fanciful lion's head flanked by integrated scrollwork and foliates.  An amazing work of truly talented artisans!
