Antique Arts & Crafts Mahogany Hall Tree with Ceramic Painted Tiles is a splendid example of the genre, which appeared on the style scene just before the turn of the 20th century and coincided with the Art Nouveau movement and eventually the early appearance of the Art Deco style.  Characterized by a whimsical interpretation of forms inspired by nature, the style was rustic in nature, but took several turns.  This example is unusual in its composition of imported mahogany which has been carved in a tailored intaglio style into the face of the otherwise flat surfaces.  A spiral pattern inlay also appears just below the glove box, which is accessed trunk style with the lid which doubles as a surface.  Behind that surface are five hand-painted ceramic tiles for even more visual interest.  The tailored lines lead the eye up to the mirror which is subtly framed, then to a gallery of spindle rails, then an arched crown with complementary intaglio carvings.  Coat hangers are all of turned wood, and the piece sports its original tin drip pans!
