Created during the 18th century, this French Régence period secretary desk reflects the refined cabinetmaking traditions that transformed practical furnishings into richly carved works of art. The slanted drop front is embellished with latticework, foliate cartouches and sculpted floral motifs, continuing across the drawer fronts and shaped apron in a beautifully unified composition. When lowered, the front forms a generous writing surface supported by concealed pull-out supports, preserving the traditional construction of an early French bureau secrétaire.
Three spacious lower drawers provide useful storage, while the original hardware remains an important part of the desk’s historic character. Raised upon slender carved legs, the secretary has an especially appealing lightness and can serve equally well in a library, living room, bedroom or private study. Its stripped oak finish reveals the grain, hand-carved detail and centuries-old patina of the wood. This antique secretary offers both the romance of 18th century French craftsmanship and the enduring usefulness for which these desks were originally designed.
Painstakingly stripped using our proprietary process that retains the patina and sheer natural beauty of the old wood, all performed by our expert in-house staff.
Circa late 18th century.
