19th Century English Renaissance Davenport Desk is a remarkable example of the genre, with fully sculpted embellishment on all four sides!  Starting at the top we have a spindle gallery rail around the back of the top, the rest of which is slanted to make a convenient writing surface at your fingertips.  The slanted front opens to reveal a secretary style interior with another completely flat writing surface (or storage space) and cubby holes and drawers for storage of small items and writing materials.  Back again to the exterior, one can only marvel for hours on end at the astonishing artistry that envelopes the piece with Arabesque scrollwork depicting flowers and foliage, and columns on the front side with caryatids and Ionic capitals.  Even the recessed front facade features a treasure trove of sculpted detailing.  On the left side appears to be drawers, but it is a false facade ~ only the right side has actual drawers which is a characteristic of the Davenport design.  The front is carved with amazing detail making it a great choice for anywhere in the room, especially the center for all to appreciate and admire!
