19th Century French Louis XV Walnut Desk ~ Bureau Plat is a beautifully preserved historical piece the design for which has inspired furniture makers since the middle of the 18th century! The bureau plat or flat desk was designed as a bridge between a heavy, cumbersome executive desk and a writing table, providing a minimum of visual weight while still providing a spacious work surface and sufficient drawer space that is not a hallmark of the smaller writing tables. This example exudes the luxury and majesty of the Louis XV style, inspired by the Baroque and Rococo movements, The elegant lines start at the top, finished in oriented grain panels and trimmed all around with contoured double beveled edging, with recesses where the user would sit that provide extra comfort and convenience. Underneath is where much of the magic occurs, with opulent scrolls dominating the architecture, enhanced with fancy molding punctuated with foliate flourishes, and a separate, more internally located molding trim to complement the edging. This work is done on all four sides, creating a look that is stunning no matter where it's placed in the room, nor from what angle it's viewed. Drawers are fitted with fancy cast bronze pulls with matching key guards. Support is provided by graceful cabriole legs carved with stylized shell and acanthus plumes and escargot feet all around. The carving on the entire piece is further enhanced by hand-painted gold highlighting for a mesmerizing effect.
