19th Century French Renaissance Barley Twist Desk ~ Bureau Plat is a splendid example of the period, and unusual for having three drawers.  Hand-crafted and sculpted from old-growth oak, it features a fully gadrooned top edge overlooking the casework below which consists of the drawer tier, and relief carving on all four sides.  Each corner features a three dimensional corbel treatment to soften the sharp edges.  The carved motifs include stylized grapevine foliates and crests, with each drawer sporting its own separate carved detail while the opposite side, the "front" presented to the room, features a single continuous carved embellishment.  Clockwise and counter-clockwise barley twist columns provide support, and are connected with an "H" stretcher with a twist (pardon the pun), with rosettes on all the connecting plinth blocks and barley twists meeting at the center plinth block which boasts a bold flaming urn finial with winged handles to create visual interest.  Ideal for the home office, student desk or ancillary table.
