A remarkable 19th century French Renaissance writing table, crafted from solid old-growth oak and presented in a beautifully stripped finish that softens the carving while revealing the depth and character of the wood. The design is both sculptural and surprisingly airy, with a plank top raised above a single-drawer case and an open architectural base.
The desk is finished on all sides, making it a wonderful choice for floating in a room. The front and back are richly carved, while the drawers open from one side, each accented with heraldic crests, acanthus foliage, and elegant brass bale pulls. Bold lion heads flank the drawers, adding strength and Renaissance drama, while carved rosettes follow the graceful arch of the kneehole.
The base is especially striking, with crisscross supports inspired by ancient forms, connected for stability and resting on lion’s paw feet. Cherub busts at the intersections add a romantic, classical detail, giving the piece the presence of both a desk and a work of decorative sculpture.
A beautiful French Renaissance piece with history, craftsmanship, and architectural character—ideal as a writing table, library desk, or statement piece in a richly layered interior.
