A rare French Renaissance Revival partner's desk in walnut, magnificently hand carved with angels at all four corners and lion's heads at its four feet. As messengers of God and guardians of the faithful, the angels keep watch from each corner, each crowned by a turned pendant finial. Below, the lions lend their strength, supporting the entire desk, the lion long honored as the Lion of Judah, a symbol of the Son of God. Together, the guardianship of the angels and the strength of the lions give the carving a deep spiritual meaning.
Two drawers grace each long side, making it a true partner's desk where two people may sit and work face to face, a rare find in antique furniture. The drawer fronts are carved with stylized leaf panels and rosettes, and a faux leather writing surface is framed by boldly carved egg and dart gadrooning. Fluted columns joined by graceful arches form an architectural arcade, standing on an H stretcher in trestle form for lasting strength.
Discovered in Lyon, a city with a storied history of master cabinetmakers known for some of the finest walnut furniture of the 19th century. Under Napoleon III, French cabinetmakers revived and reinterpreted the great styles of their heritage, and Renaissance Revival became one of the most celebrated styles of the second half of the century. Finished beautifully on every side, the desk can stand between two windows or in the center of a library, study, or great room, with chairs on either side.
