We are always delighted to find a set of twelve antique dining chairs that has remained together, especially one that includes two armchairs. Crafted of solid oak in the Country French Régence manner, this set has the scale to furnish a large dining room and the carved detail to reward a closer look at each chair. The tall, open backs rise to shaped crests centered with shells, their carving carried down to the lower back rails. Deeply worked serpentine aprons lend movement beneath the upholstered seats, while cabriole legs terminate in hoof feet.
The two armchairs are broader than the side chairs, with shaped arms and a presence suited to their place at either end of the set.
The shells and flowing contours draw on the decorative language of the Régence, a style that brought greater freedom of line and ornament to French furniture. Here, that artistry is expressed in oak, with the warmth and character that make Country French antiques so appealing. The seats are upholstered in vintage silk cut velvet, which remains in serviceable condition.
Our craftsmen have carefully cleaned and hand-waxed the frames, enriching the natural tone and patina of the oak and bringing the carving into sharper relief. Finding twelve matching chairs with their two larger armchairs is a special opportunity to acquire a beautifully detailed antique set as a whole.
