Set of 8 French Louis XVI painted dining chairs, designed with the restrained symmetry and graceful architecture that made the Louis XVI style one of the most enduring French neoclassical forms.  Inspired by the late 18th century return to classical antiquity, these chairs carry the hallmarks of the period: clean lines, balanced proportions, fluted tapered legs, and delicate carved ornamentation that feels elegant without becoming overly ornate.
The backs are especially lovely, with a shaped rectangular form crowned by a softly arched crest rail and framed with carved beading.  Each back centers a pale upholstered panel, giving the chairs a refined, tailored appearance.  The apron is carved with a repeating geometric motif, while the upper corners are accented with floral rosettes, a classic Louis XVI detail that adds a touch of romance to the disciplined neoclassical frame.
The painted finish has developed a soft, timeworn patina, allowing the carving and form to remain the focus.  The fluted legs are slender and beautifully scaled, giving the set a light architectural rhythm around a dining table.  Elegant, comfortable, and full of French character, this set offers the classic beauty of Louis XVI design with the relaxed charm of an aged painted finish.
The upholstery is weathered but serviceable and can be recovered at a later date.
