Set of Six 19th Century French Empire Inlaid Mahogany Dining Chairs were crafted during the reign of Napoleon III to revive the late Directoire ~ early Empire styles of his uncle's reign. Hand-crafted from exotic imported mahogany, each features a gracefully scrolled framework that is undeniably French in form, with a rolled seatback top that enhances comfort as well as provides a handle for pulling the chair away from the table when assisting someone to their seat. Flat brass wire inlay was used for bordering, and appears on the apron, legs, entire seatback, with a double row of bordering and diamond form appearing on the aforementioned rolled seatback top. Relatively recently reupholstered in fine black silk fabric, the pattern features embroidered bees. The bee was chosen as a symbol of Napoleon Bonaparte's reign recalling the first millennium Merovingian kingdom of 5th century France, and was chosen for the symbolism of immortality and resurrection.
Circa 1870s
Each measures 35H x 19W x 22D; seat 19H
