SaleSet of twelve Swedish Gustavian dining chairs, including two armchairs, crafted in the refined neoclassical spirit that defined late 18th century Scandinavian design. The Gustavian style, inspired by King Gustav III’s admiration for French neoclassicism, brought a softer, lighter interpretation to Sweden, favoring graceful lines, restrained ornamentation, and an elegance beautifully suited to country houses and grand interiors alike.
Each chair features a shield shaped back with a carved diamond rosette framed by delicate beading, creating a crisp architectural motif without overwhelming the purity of the form. The open backs are enhanced by elegant scrolling supports, while the gently splayed legs and shaped seats give the set a poised, balanced presence. The original craftsmanship is evident in the pegged mortise and tenon construction, a traditional method that speaks to the integrity and longevity of 18th century furniture making.
Recently upholstered in striped mohair with brass nailhead trim, the chairs are ready to be enjoyed at the dining table while preserving the romantic character and quiet refinement of their Gustavian heritage. A rare full set of twelve, with two armchairs, offering both history and beautiful scale for an elegant dining room.
