Carved from solid oak in the celebrated Liégeoise manner, the shaped top features a molded edge and gently incurved corners above an apron rich with ornament. At the center of the front, a scallop shell cartouche is framed by scrolling acanthus and flanked by panels of finely incised trelliswork, a motif carried around the sides.
Graceful cabriole legs rise to carved shells and acanthus at the knees, then descend to elegant hoof feet, known in France as pieds de biche.
Stripping the old finish has revealed the natural grain of the oak and brought every detail of the carving into crisp relief.
Generous knee clearance allows the table to serve beautifully for dining or as a commanding writing desk. Note: the knee clearance provided below is at the lowest point of the apron carving centered between the legs; there's more clearance on both sides of the carving.
Circa early 1900s
