SaleAntique French Louis XVI writing desk, game table and breakfast table in one, hand crafted from solid quarter sawn oak glowing with a warm, richly figured patina. Gracefully scrolled cabriole legs rise to knees carved with acanthus and floral sprays, while all four aprons are framed in molded panels centered by delicately carved ribbon swags. Below, a sweeping stretcher gathers at a carved center crowned by a prominent acorn finial, a classic emblem of strength and longevity.
Each of the two short sides conceals a drawer with surprising capacity, keeping stationery, playing cards or table linens close at hand. Every apron is carved to match, so the table is beautiful from any angle and can float freely in a room.
Created in the early years of the 20th century, the table carries forward the great French revival of the 19th century, when Parisian cabinetmakers celebrated the refined legacy of French furniture making. The Louis XVI style is admired for its neoclassical elegance, refinement of line and delicacy of ornament, all expressed here in carefully hand carved detail.
Ideal as a breakfast table in a sunlit kitchen, a writing desk in a library or home office, or a game table for cards and chess.
A matching set of six French Louis XVI dining chairs is available separately and makes a wonderful addition to complete the solid oak setting. The chairs retain their original leather upholstery in serviceable condition, functional and beautiful, with tones that blend gracefully with their solid oak frames. See Related Products below left.
