19th Century French Late Louis Philippe Period Giltwood Mirror is a great example of the waning years of the period, when Napoleon III rose to power and historically-oriented embellishments began to once again appear in the design world.  In this example, the classic tailored lines of the frame exemplify the Louis Philippe genre, with tailored molding, rounded top shoulders, and an extremely subtle embossed pattern faintly evident through the gold leaf finish.  Beaded trim also immediately surrounds the mirror with its original silvering, showing wonderful signs of true aging yet still providing a lovely reflection.  The top is where the transitional aspects appear, with an elegant acanthus leaf flourish taking center stage, flanked by floral and foliate sprays on each side to create a splendid yet understated elegance to the visual effect.
