19th Century Hand-Carved Renaissance Revival Mantel Mirror is a splendid example of wood sculpture, depicting a wide variety of Classical and Baroque-inspired renditions of naturalistic scrolls, wildflowers, foliates and even conifers! The shield-shaped form includes pierce-carved frameworks on the sides creating elaborate pilasters that support the entire affair, including a boldly double-scrolled crown lavished with mesmerizing detail. The three prominent conifer cones serve as finials on top, and the intricate carved detail completely surrounds the original hand-beveled mirror, even across the base. Look carefully, and you'll see the chiseled signature of the artist who sculpted the framework, E. Goelen, which is a very unusual aspect of such a work of art! The panel on the back has been replaced recently to protect the silver which remains in exceptionally good condition.
Circa 1890s
