Graceful ribbons, delicate floral garlands, and beautifully aged gilding give this 19th century Italian Louis XVI carved wood mirror an unmistakably romantic presence. The tall rectangular frame is crowned by an elaborate hand carved crest, where a tied ribbon rises above a floral medallion surrounded by scrolling foliage and laurel leaves.
The carved wood frame combines gilded and painted finishes, creating a softly contrasting two tone surface that enhances the depth of the ornamentation. A finely beaded inner border surrounds the mirror glass, while trailing garlands descend from the upper corners. Carved rosettes and pendant details complete the balanced neoclassical composition.
The Louis XVI design genre drew inspiration from the symmetry and refined ornament of classical antiquity, favoring ribbons, floral swags, laurel leaves, and orderly proportions.
