19th Century Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Paul Henry Schouten (1864-1922) is a vibrant example of the storied artist's work surviving in its original frame, and depicting a coop full of chickens enjoying the yard outside a well used barnyard.
Distinguishing himself in the art world during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Schouten was known for his ability to capture the soul of rural life and the animation of the animals that inhabited these rustic scenes, at once helping to define the style of Realism while injecting the sheer charm of country life.  He attended the prestigious Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and subsequently became known for timeless works elevating the theme of rural life.  He was quite prolific, with hundreds of works attributed to him, as well as under his pseudonyms like "J. Klass" and more.  His works remain a standard by which such scenes are depicted, imbued by character studies of his subjects and the quiet dignity of the slower-paced life.
