19th Century Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Henry Schouten (1857-1927) is a marvelous example of the artist's work, depicting an alert cock standing guard over his hen and chicks. Note the masterful treatment of light and shadow, and subtle yet amazingly realistic use of color. Henry Schouten hailed from Ghent, the fabled ancient city that resides in what is now called Belgium. He studied under Alfred Verwee at the Art Academy of Brussels, and soon gravitated towards a specialty in landscapes with animals and livestock. He was a master of depicting animals in their natural surroundings, paying extra attention to the various features and distinctive traits of the varying breeds. Schouten's paintings have been much prized by admirers of rural life depictions beginning with the Belgian bourgeoisie in the second half of the 19th century. Survives in its original finely detailed giltwood frame.
