19th Century Framed Oil Painting on Canvas "Standing Guard" signed G. Dewyse is a superlative example of the genre, depicting farm animals and livestock as nobility.  In this scene, the ram keeps guard over the flock like a sentinel, with no visible fencing in view.  A quaint thatch-roofed stable is nearby, with excellent transition between the man-made creation and the animals who deliver a pastoral setting to the mood of the work.  Puffy and graying clouds unsuccessfully try to hide the beautiful blue sky overhead.  Survives in its original finely detailed giltwood frame.
