A Belgian impressionist oil on canvas by Albert Chavepeyer (1899-1986), painted with the quick, sure hand of an artist devoted to the rivers and hills of his native Wallonia. A still river rests beneath rocky heights, with rowing boats moored along the bank. Thick impasto and broken strokes of sage, rose, violet and gold give the water a soft, shifting light, and the reflections carry the mood of a quiet afternoon on the river. Signed lower right.
Born in Châtelet in 1899, Chavepeyer studied under Sylvain and Eugène Paulus and later at the Academy of Liège. He began in photography, won poster prizes in Liège and France, and worked as an illustrator and poster artist in Paris before turning fully to painting in his forties.
He helped found artistic circles in Charleroi, along the Sambre and in Thudinie. River landscapes, village views and the Gilles of Binche stayed his lifelong subjects. The towns of Châtelet and Binche acquired his works, and Châtelet honored him with a retrospective in 1978.
This work sits in a stepped frame with a soft grey green finish and a gilded liner that echoes the muted palette of the painting. It suits a place above a mantel or console, in a library, or among French and Belgian antiques in a study or sitting room.|
