Location: Dallas
A European oil painting on panel showing a quiet farmhouse beside a pond at the close of day, in its original giltwood frame. The artist works with a loose, confident hand. The sky is built in short layered strokes of lavender, rose and pale gold, and the land is laid in thick impasto that gives the surface a rich, sculptural texture. The last light of sunset settles on pools of still water and on the whitewashed walls of a thatched cottage, and a line of pollarded willows fades into the evening haze. The perspective carries the eye gently from the grassy bank in the foreground, across the marshy meadow, to the distant horizon.
Thatched farmhouses, wet meadows and willow lined fields were favorite subjects of the landscape painters of the Low Countries and northern France around the turn of the 20th century. These artists left the studio to paint directly from nature, attentive to atmosphere and the shifting quality of light at dawn and dusk. The scene is painted on a hand hewn wooden panel, a sturdy support long favored for work done outdoors. The age of the panel and its surface speak to the painting's age.
The original giltwood frame, with stepped cove moldings and warm red bole glowing through the softly worn gilding, suits the earthy palette of the scene. An exceptional work of art that deserves a place in today's interiors, with an intimate scale and glowing evening light that bring warmth and calm to a library, a study, a bedroom or a gallery wall.
Circa 1910.
