Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Jan Deckers (1865-1942) is a stunningly realistic depiction of a basket of fresh-picked flowers that seems to have escaped the grasp of the gardener.  The leaves and flower petals were depicted at the canted angle for visual interest, held in a much-used wicker basket.  Note the artist's expert use of background and shadow to blend the color palette and provide subtle, soft definition.  What appears to be the original finely detailed frame exhibits extraordinary condition and beauty, only adding to the overall effect.  Jan Deckers, who is internationally renowned for his still life works, came from a family of artists, his father Edward being a sculptor.  Jan was born in Antwerp in 1865.  He studied at the Academy of Fine arts in Antwerp until he moved to Paris to continue his art education.  Eventually Jan returned to Antwerp, becoming an instructor of painting at the same Academy where he studied so many years before.
