Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Rene Clarot (1882-1972) is a charming retrospective view of a fisherman's dock in a quaint Belgian harbor town set in the late 19th century. Nets are seen drying on the dock, as the fishermen discuss the day's catch. Sails are slack, being allowed to fully dry before tomorrow's excursions. Note the boats are meticulously numbered so the owner can keep track of his fleet. Ever present sea gulls approach seeking opportunities for feeding. All in all, a beautiful day! René Clarot was a Belgian who was born in Anderlecht in 1882 and died in 1972 in Ixelles. He received formal education at the Academy in Brussels under H.Richer and C. Montald. His favorite subjects were landscapes, city and river views, marines, and interiors. Spending 20 years of his artistic life in Blankenberge, he developed a special preference for sea and harbor views which obviously fascinated him. He was known for his pasty brush strokes. He was mentioned in Belgian Art Society I and Two Centuries of Signatures of Belgian Artists.
