Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Victor Wagemaekers (1876-1953) is a splendid example of post-impressionism, blending a bold palette with a peaceful pastoral setting to create visual intrigue.  The artist has immersed the viewer into the forest setting, with only a hint of sky peeking through the branches of the canopy and an inviting reflective creek leading the eye into the composition.  Survives in its original frame.
Victor Wagemaekers was a native of Gannshoren, Belgium and became known as a painter of genre scenes, landscapes and still-lifes.  He's also known to have worked with watercolor as a medium.  He studied under Courtens at the turn of the 20th century, and went on to further his career in Brussels, its suburbs and in the La Campine region of Belgium.  Some of his inspiration came from the beautiful environs around Grimbergen.  His first exhibition was in affiliation with the noted art group, "Le Sillon” in 1899 and he subsequently became a member of this illustrious assemblage.  A retrospective of his work was held at the Center of Art in Koekelberg in 1965. Examples of Wagemaeker’s works can today be found in numerous private and public collections including museums in Antwerp and Turnout.
