Captivating Antique Belgian Oil Painting on Canvas by Xavier Wurth (1869-1933) depicts the Ourthe River winding quietly through the wooded valleys of the Ardennes, a region that inspired some of the artist’s finest landscapes. Wurth creates a remarkable sense of depth, drawing the eye from the softly illuminated grasses and foliage of the foreground toward the silvery blue water as it disappears beneath a dense canopy of trees.
Towering evergreens rise dramatically along the riverbank, their deep greens and blue green shadows balanced by the lighter foliage at left and the cool, atmospheric blues of the distant hills. Above, a broad expanse of softly modeled clouds allows diffused light to settle across the landscape and shimmer upon the moving water, giving the scene the misty, poetic quality for which Wurth’s Ardennes paintings are particularly admired.  His attention to perspective, light and subtle changes in color gives the landscape both intimacy and considerable depth, capturing the quiet beauty of the forests, rivers and valleys he knew so well.
The painting survives in its original beautifully ornamented gilt frame, whose warm gold tones and sculpted scrolling decoration provide an elegant complement to the deep woodland palette.
Wurth excelled in all areas: portraits, seascapes, and still lifes, although those types are less well known than his landscapes of the Ardennes which made his reputation.  Wurth commonly depicted clouds and light with the accompanying luminosity creating a powerful presence on the canvas.  His production of oils, watercolors, and drawings was very important in the Liège region, where a Wurth was hung on the wall of all the bourgeois houses.  From 1889 to 1893, Xavier Wurth was a pupil of Adrien de Witte and Évariste Carpentier at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Liège. He exhibited many times and won the Prix de Rome. Friend of Richard Heintz, Auguste Donnay and Albert Sirtaine, he gave a particularly delicate shine to the Ardennes landscapes. About ten works can be found at the Museum of Walloon Art. He was also professor of drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège from 1921 to 1932.
