An antique Belgian oil on canvas landscape by Xavier Wurth, painted in the Ardennes countryside with the calm, luminous air of a summer afternoon. Wurth was admired above all for his skies, and here tall white clouds drift across a wide blue expanse, their light falling in patches over the green and golden fields of the valley below. A farm track winds through the meadow toward a thatched cottage with a thin line of smoke rising from its chimney, and cows graze quietly on the slope. The brushwork is loose and confident, rooted in the Belgian plein air tradition, capturing sun, wind and distance with ease.
Born in Liège in 1869, Xavier Wurth trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Liège under Adrien de Witte and Évariste Carpentier. He devoted much of his career to the Ardennes, painting its hills, forests and the river valleys of the Meuse and the Ourthe, and his luminous treatment of clouds became a signature of his work. He later taught drawing at the Academy, where Paul Lepage became his most celebrated student. His works are held in the collection of the Musée de l'Art wallon in Liège.
Signed lower left and presented in a gilt frame, the landscape brings light and open space to a living room, library or entry, and pairs beautifully with French country interiors, European antiques and classic contemporary settings.
