Antique Framed Oil Painting on Canvas of Venice by Mauretti is a superlative example of an Italian vedute, an art form originally intended for Venetian dignitaries and later blossoming as souvenirs over the last several centuries, inspired by masters such as Canaletto and Belotto. The works rendered the picturesque city in what was then an innovative perspective method, adding realism and depth to the paintings that simultaneously rendered them uniquely special as well as innovative enough to bring the techniques to many other art forms, especially cityscapes and landscapes. Here we see a scene right off the Grand Canal with gondolas at dock and plying the still waters. Such watercraft were used as we would cars and trucks today on paved streets. The domed structure in the background appears to be the famed Santa Della Maria Salute Cathedral. Survives in its original frame with artist's signature lower right.
Circa mid-1900s
