Antique Framed Oil Painting on Panel by Joseph Couture (1890-1965) is a splendid still life by the accomplished artist, using shadow and muted earth tones to create an unforgettable image.  He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège, where he attended classes taught by Adrien de Witte, Auguste Donnay, Évariste Carpentier, and François Maréchal.  He volunteered for service during World War I, was wounded during the conflict and granted war invalid status.  After the war he taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts until 1954.  Known for his landscapes, seascapes, and especially his still lifes, he used many media to great effect as evidenced by this particular work.  His works are displayed in the Museum of Walloon and the Province of Liege, and have been exhibited at the Royal Circle of Fine Arts of Liege, the Palace of Fine Arts in the Pac de la Boverie, the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and many more.
