A grand Dutch marine oil on canvas portraying the legendary four masted barque Kruzenshtern on a reach at dusk. Painted in a restrained palette of sepia, pewter and pale gold, the scene carries the quiet, timeless mood of an early maritime photograph, with careful attention to rigging, sail and the weight of a heavy sea. A lighthouse glimmers on a distant shoreline, a note of stillness beside the ship's powerful motion. Signed A.D. Bakker in the lower right, the canvas follows the long Dutch tradition of ship portraiture, where precision of detail and devotion to the sea go hand in hand.
The ship herself has one of the most remarkable histories on the water. Launched in 1926 at the Tecklenborg yard in Geestemünde, Germany, as the Padua, she was the last of the famous Flying P-Liners of the Hamburg firm F. Laeisz, carrying cargo around Cape Horn to Chile and Australia. Her voyage of 1938 and 1939 from Hamburg to Chile, Australia and back in just under nine months remains a record for a tall ship. After the Second World War she passed to the Soviet Union and was renamed Kruzenshtern, in honor of the admiral who led Russia's first voyage around the world. She still sails today as a training ship from Kaliningrad.
Presented in a stepped dark wood frame with a gilt liner, the grand scale makes a commanding statement in a library, study or entry hall, bringing a sense of adventure and history to traditional and coastal interiors alike.  Signed A.D.Bakker.
