9.5H x 7.5W
Location: Dallas
An antique Belgian oil painting on board, depicting the flower market on the Grand Place in Brussels in rich, sculptural impasto. Pink, coral, saffron and white blooms crowd the market stalls beneath the gray silhouettes of the square's Gothic façades. The paint is built up in thick ridges, so the flowers seem to gather the soft light of an overcast Brussels morning.
Flowers have been sold on the Grand Place since the Middle Ages, and the market among the guildhalls became a beloved subject for Belgian painters of the early 20th century. The artist works with speed and assurance, letting color and texture carry the scene in the spirit of Belgian Post Impressionism between the wars. Hand painted on a wood panel and signed lower left "M. Van D."
Intimate in scale and wonderful up close, it is lovely on a small easel atop a desk, console or bookshelf, or grouped within a gallery wall of European cityscapes.
Circa 1930s.
