Edgar De Vos's "Country Landscape" opens onto a broad green meadow at the turn of the season. A dirt path curves gently through the foreground, and a stand of slender trees, their leaves just touched with autumn gold, frames a view of red roofed farmhouses beneath a gathering sky. Clouds roll in over the fields while sunlight still rests on the grass, and the scene feels like the moment before a summer rain, with the countryside holding still.
De Vos paints with the same finely layered touch seen across his series of landscapes. He sets each leaf down in small, lively strokes of green, ochre and rust, so the trees seem to move in the breeze. The path draws the eye past the tree trunks toward the distant farms, giving the composition depth and a sense of quiet discovery. His work carries the spirit of the realist and plein air painters who turned to the rural countryside of northern Europe and recorded its light, weather and simple beauty directly from nature.
Presented in a painted inner frame with a wide linen liner, which sets off the rich greens and autumn tones of the landscape. Signed lower right. A companion to De Vos's "Lake Landscape," also part of the series.
Circa early 1900s
