Framed Oil on Canvas, Still Life with Chrysanthemums, by M. Taquet-Beal, 1944, Belgium is a luminous oil on canvas of quiet confidence and genuine artistic accomplishment, painted in the great tradition of Belgian and Northern European floral still life that stretches back to the golden age of Flemish painting.
A generous bouquet of chrysanthemums in full bloom commands the composition, their petals rendered in a rich palette of golden yellow, soft white, blush pink, deep crimson and warm burgundy.  The blooms spill outward with natural abundance, several falling freely onto the surface below, lending the composition an air of unstudied generosity so characteristic of the finest Belgian flower painters.  The foliage is handled with equal confidence, its deep greens providing a lush counterpoint to the luminous flowers above.
The vessel anchoring the arrangement is a beautifully observed dark metal urn of classical form, its decorative relief catching the light with subtle precision.  The warm, softly graduated background grounds the composition with understated sophistication, drawing the eye naturally to the brilliance of the blooms.
The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1944, placing its creation during the German occupation of Belgium, a period when many artists continued to work quietly and privately.  It arrives in its original ornate gilt frame, which suits the work with great elegance.
The artist, M. Taquet-Beal, resided in the Liège region of Belgium, working in the accomplished academic tradition of floral painting and still life of her time.
