Framed Oil Painting on Board by Professor Leon Fredericq (1851-1935)
Professor Leon Fredericq was the very definition of a Renaissance man.  Born in 1851, by the time he was 20 he had already obtained a Doctorate Degree from the University of Ghent.  Continuing his studies, he achieved doctorates in medicine, surgery and obstetrics, and physiological sciences, all before his 38th birthday!  He also had a talent for art, and prepared this scene inspired by the Haute Fagnes, or High Fens for his friend, Professor Bouillenne who was stationed in the region for his own studies.  His eye for color subtleties is showcased in this work, with shadowplay in the foreground, the rolling hills in the distance creating a boundary between the earth and sky, and his depiction of the sky itself with intriguing interpretation of cloud cover.
