Branches of golden forsythia sweep across Clémence Biron’s 1925 still life, capturing the abundance of one of spring’s earliest flowering shrubs. Biron follows the natural reach of the branches as they spill from a blue vase, painting the blossoms in lively strokes of yellow and ochre.
Deeper greens and browns gather at the center of the arrangement, while a small cobalt bowl echoes the vase below. The pale background gives the flowers room to shine, and the carved wooden frame completes this expressive antique Belgian oil painting. Signed at the lower right.
Born in the 19th century and active in the early 20th century, Clémence Biron hailed from Valenciennes in 1889 to Belgian parents. She studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts under Herman Richir and graduated in 1915. She painted flowers, still lifes, and landscapes with an Impressionist influenced freedom of brushwork and a keen understanding of color. Works by Biron have been reported in the museum at Namur.
