A serene Belgian landscape with Impressionist overtones, this oil painting on canvas by Eugène Colignon (1876–1961) depicts the historic church at Lives-sur-Meuse in the Meuse Valley near Namur. A quiet country path leads through lush vegetation and weathered stone toward the village church and its distinctive tower, capturing the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside.
Colignon achieves remarkable dimension and perspective with an expert hand. Rich greens throughout the foreground and deeper blues within the distant landscape and rooftops give the composition depth, while his visible brushstrokes create wonderful texture in the foliage, grasses and old stonework. The eye follows the path naturally from the textured foreground toward the historic church and tower beyond, giving the intimate landscape a convincing sense of distance and atmosphere.
Eugène Colignon (1876–1961) was a Belgian landscape painter born in Namur and closely associated throughout his career with the landscapes of the Meuse Valley. He studied at the Académie des Beaux Arts de Namur under Désiré Merny and continued his training at the Académie in Brussels with the important Belgian painter Isidore Verheyden. His work was influenced by the Tervuren School, Théodore Baron and Neo Impressionism, particularly in his interest in changing light and the use of direct, visible touches of color. Although he traveled and painted throughout Europe and North Africa, the countryside surrounding Namur and the Meuse Valley remained an enduring subject. Colignon later became a professor of drawing at the Académie des Beaux Arts de Namur, where he taught from 1930 to 1946.
“Church of Lives-sur-Meuse” brings together the qualities for which Colignon’s landscapes are admired: expressive brushwork, rich color, texture, atmospheric light and a masterful sense of perspective. Signed by the artist and presented in a dark wood frame, it is a serene and beautifully accomplished view of the Meuse Valley he knew so well.
