A Belgian Expressionist still life in oil on canvas by Gustave Camus, filled with warm golden light and a gentle, contemplative mood. Honeyed ochre, sage and olive green, amber, and the rosy blush of ripe fruit flow together in beautiful harmony, and rich impasto gives every form a sculptural presence. Pears and apples gathered in the foreground are mirrored in the polished tabletop, leading the eye back to a footed compote of pears and the soft, hazy wall beyond, creating a lovely sense of depth and space. A lidded ewer glows quietly at the left, and a large green glass bottle anchors the right, its transparent body holding pale reflections of light. Signed lower right "G. Camus."
Gustave Camus (1914-1984) was one of the leading Belgian painters of the Hainaut region. In 1933 he cofounded the group Art Vivant au Pays de Charleroi with Georges Wasterlain, and after the Second World War critics firmly established his reputation. His early work, close in spirit to Fauvism, is admired for its bold color and expressive brushwork, and a journey to Brittany in 1946 opened a second period that would shape his art for years to come.
For a quarter century, from 1951 to 1976, he taught painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts of Mons, twice serving as its director. In 1962 the city of Charleroi commissioned from him a monumental fresco of some 20 square meters devoted to the theme of labor, and his work is held in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Charleroi.
A beautiful addition to a dining room, kitchen, or library, bringing warmth and quiet elegance to a classic or contemporary interior.
Circa mid 20th century.
