A sweeping Ardennes landscape unfolds beneath an overcast sky in this signed and dated 1952 oil painting on canvas by Belgian artist Jean François. Entitled “Forest of Saint Hubert,” the painting captures the untamed beauty of the Belgian countryside, where a winding stream leads the eye across open fields and deep into the distant forest.
François builds the landscape with expressive brushwork and a beautifully subdued palette of moss green, ochre, brown, gray and blue. Bare trees rise against the cloud filled sky, bringing structure and depth to the expansive view. Pale reflections animate the flowing water, creating a natural path through the quiet terrain. The carved giltwood frame complements the painting with warmth and understated elegance.
Jean François (1903-1977) was born in Huy, Belgium, and died in Liège. A self taught landscape painter and accomplished draftsman, he was also an engineer, architect and professor at the University of Liège. François became a member of the Royal Circle of Fine Arts of Liège in 1925 and exhibited there through 1973. His profound appreciation for the Ardennes extended beyond his paintings. He became an important advocate for preserving the character of its landscapes and thoughtfully integrating architecture into historic rural settings.
