A peaceful view of a village along the Saulx River in the Meuse region of northeastern France is captured in this evocative oil on canvas by José Salvaggio. Rising above the tiled rooftops and mature trees, the village church creates a commanding focal point, while a sunlit field of golden grasses draws the eye into the landscape. Broad, expressive brushwork gives movement to the foreground and foliage, balanced by a luminous sky painted in softly layered shades of gray, blue and ivory. Born in Sicily in 1953, José Salvaggio moved to France at an early age and established himself as an accomplished painter of landscapes and urban views. He studied in Paris with Paul Anderbouhr and later attended the school of Émilie Simon, where he worked with Claude Marin. Known for painting directly from life, Salvaggio is particularly admired for his ability to capture changing light, seasonal color and the immediate character of a place through confident, Impressionistic brushwork. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are held in private and public collections throughout Europe, North America and Japan.
