“Adriatic Coastline” by Belgian artist Paule Bisman captures the romance of antique village houses gathered beneath a stone tower overlooking the sea. Warm ochre and ivory architecture complement the luminous blues of water and sky, while textured brushwork brings the rocky shoreline into focus. The curved quay leads the eye toward a sailboat and distant mountains, creating depth through increasingly softened color.
Small figures establish the scale of the village and lend a quiet intimacy to the coastal panorama. Signed at the lower right, this oil on canvas is presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling floral ornament and an appealing aged patina.
Paule Bisman (1897–1973) was a Belgian painter and sculptor born in Namur. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Namur before continuing her training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Her paintings encompassed portraits, interiors, townscapes and landscapes, while her figurative bronzes reflected the influence of Art Deco. Working across both disciplines, she combined traditional craftsmanship with a sensitive understanding of form and expression, qualities evident in the textured architecture and atmospheric depth of “Adriatic Coastline.”
