A country road curves toward a cluster of farm buildings beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky in this signed oil on panel by Belgian painter Lucien Dasselborne. The red roof and sunlit walls draw the eye through the landscape, while small figures along the road bring a sense of daily life to the scene.
Dasselborne paints the trees and foreground with vigorous, textured strokes, then softens his handling around the distant rooftops and church spire. Rich greens, warm earth tones, and flashes of light give this intimate painting the atmosphere of a countryside observed firsthand. Its deeply carved gilt frame complements the movement of the brushwork and gives the composition a distinguished finish.
Born in Louvroil in 1873, Lucien Dasselborne studied law before turning to painting during the First World War. He continued his artistic training in Paris and became a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received an honorable mention in 1922. He also exhibited in Belgium, including shows in Renaix. His standing in the arts of the region is reflected in the Prix Lucien Dasselborne, awarded in connection with the Museum of Fine Arts in Tournai.
