A floral still life in oil on canvas by Belgian painter Marcel Mortier, in its original gold leaf frame chosen by the artist himself. A loose bouquet of coral red, cobalt blue, and soft yellow flowers sits in a blue celadon vase, bursting with colors in life of flowers. Placed on a draped table, the colors flow in a textured mist. Petals seem to open and drift as you look, as if the bouquet were caught in morning light.
A border of pale aqua triangles along the tablecloth anchors the scene, and the longer you stand with it, the more the flowers come alive. Mortier selected the wide frame to give the painting depth and draw the eye inward, and the overlapping leaves of hand-laid gold show the quality of his choice. The frame presents the painting exactly as the artist intended. Signed lower right.
Marcel Mortier came from a family of Brussels painters. He was the son of Emile Mortier (1892 to 1977), who trained at the Brussels Academy and painted seascapes, fishermen and still lifes. Marcel was largely self taught and found his own direction. He lived for a time in Egypt and traveled through Morocco and Algeria, painting landscapes and scenes of daily life. In 1956 father and son exhibited together at the Lautrec gallery in Brussels, and Marcel's work is held in the museum collection at Dunkirk.
