Mid-19th Century Large Framed Oval Oil Portrait on Canvas by L. Nicolas was painted after the style of Jean Baptiste Greuze's "The Broken Pitcher", and is an exquisite portrait of a beautiful young maiden, rendered on an oval canvas and mounted in its original gilded frame to create a wonderful image produced before the days of photography.  Portrait artists were able to adjust background settings, raiment, jewelry, even facial features in this manner, according to the wishes of the patron or the whims of the artist.  Therefore not always precise in their imagery, portraits such as this exquisite example render an idyllic representation of the most desirable portrayal possible, lending historians valuable information on the culture of this bygone era.
