Location: Dallas
Expansive and atmospheric, this mid-century oil painting on canvas by Henri Lemoine captures a windswept countryside beneath a vast, changing sky. Heavy clouds gather across the horizon in layered shades of blue, gray, cream and muted green, while the open landscape below unfolds through broad passages of ochre, olive and deep brown.
The artist’s expressive brushwork gives the composition remarkable movement, allowing the sky to dominate the scene while the low horizon draws the eye into the distance. A winding path leads through the rugged terrain, adding depth and inviting the viewer into this quiet, untamed landscape. The restrained palette and painterly handling reflect the expressive spirit of European landscape painting during the mid-20th century.
Signed and dated H. Lemoine in the lower right and presented in an attractive period giltwood frame with contrasting gray inner matte.
Self-taught at the start of his career (1942–1960), Lemoine later took classes at the academies of Ixelles and Boitsfort. From 1960 onwards, together with his friend Piet Volkaerts, he took a particular interest in the daily lives of ordinary people of Brussels.
