Pair Antique Framed Religious Paintings on Panel of Saints Anna and Lodevicus are beautiful works in sepia tones with the subjects appearing as marble statues set in a moorish arched framework inside the framework of the overall painting.  Small villages and towns in Europe typically had their patron saints, some of which have become somewhat obscure over the ages, but nonetheless important to that particular hamlet.  This pair were painted according to the teachings of the Flemish school, and framed at different times and are very slightly different sizes as a result, but the effect is the same, with Saint Anna shown teaching a child, and Lodevicus in a pious pose of prayer.  Saint Anna was the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and is depicted as teaching the young Mary to read.  Lodevicus was a Latin name for Louis, representing King Louis IX, who was canonized as St. Louis, and was known for being piously devout.  He led two Crusades to the Holy Land, succumbing to malaria on the second and last excursion.
Painted by Alfons Van deVelde, a surprisingly common name, therefore dating is approximated at early 1900s
