SaleBeautifully composed and wonderfully rich in color, this vintage floral still life was painted and signed by L. Snijders in 1964. A generous bouquet of scarlet poppies, white daisies and vivid blue blossoms rises from a dark earthenware jug, the informal arrangement giving the composition the freshness of flowers gathered directly from the garden.
Snijders skillfully builds the bouquet through contrasting passages of brilliant color, allowing the white petals to catch the light while the deeper reds and blues provide depth and visual movement. The rounded brown-black vessel anchors the composition, its glossy surface punctuated by a small reflected highlight, while the subdued background of gray, mauve, blue and earthy tones allows the flowers to command attention.
The asymmetrical arrangement and loose handling of the blossoms give the painting a relaxed mid-20th-century character while retaining the long European tradition of floral still-life painting. The artist’s treatment of color, light and texture suggests a painter well acquainted with traditional representational technique, particularly in the modeling of the vessel and the layered treatment of individual blossoms.
The work is signed L. Snijders and dated 1964 at the lower left and remains presented in its handsome period giltwood frame.
