19th Century French Louis XV Walnut Canape is an extraordinary example of the Rococo expression sculpted by master artisans out of sumptuous French walnut, resulting in a piece of furniture that is also a work of art!  A surprising quantity of the luxuriously expensive wood was required to cut the naturalistic, complex forms into the required shapes, then adorn them with carved embellishment which includes a stylized shell flanked by cascading floral sprays atop the subtly arched seatback crown.  On each of the cornerposts appears scrolled flourishes on top with rosettes just above the seat, and another shell at the center.  From there the armrests follow an amazingly figured contour in serpentine form with vertically designed scroll shapes leading the eye down to the armrest tips festooned with bold acanthus plumes.  The apron contrasts with a tailored look centered with a raised oval, and is supported by the subtly scrolled legs carved with escargot feet.  Upholstered in damascene fabric which is serviceable.
